Fundamental Needs

We all have legitimate needs, environmental conditions, activities, and experiences important for physical and psychological health.

Targets often forget that they are entitled to having certain basic needs met. Needs are absolute rights to which every human being is entitled. During bullying episodes, when the bully's lies convince Targets that they are worthless, needs are ignored. Some Targets come to believe that they must relinquish their needs. The following list has examples to remind you about what you need in life. Feel free to add or omit the needs you decide are important to you.

Physical needs:

  • clean air to breathe
  • clean water to drink
  • nutritious food to eat
  • clothing and shelter
  • rest and enough sleep
  • exercise
  • physical safety, freedom from harm

 

 

 


Fundamental Needs


Emotional needs:

  • to love and to be loved (see 1-7 in our CBT list)
  • to have companionship
  • to feel respected
  • sympathy and compassion from others
  • to reciprocate that sympathy and compassion
  • when you do well - recognition and appreciation
  • when errors are made - forgiveness and understanding

Intellectual needs:

  • information
